What is Coconut Aminos?

Coconut Aminos is a soy-free alternative to soy sauce and can replace soy sauce or tamari in any recipe.

What does it taste like, and does it does it have a coconut flavor?

Coconut Aminos is truly delicious. We love it so much we pour it over almost everything! This is due to the natural “umami” characteristic of the coconut tree “sap” that it is made from. “Umami”, also known as “the fifth taste”, simply means a balanced, harmonious state of flavor perfection. And since Coconut Aminos is made from the tree sap rather than the coconut, it does not have a coconutty flavor.

How does it compare to soy sauce and tamari?

Coconut Aminos is in a unique class of its own! While it does closely resemble soy sauce and tamari, it also has a mild sweetness that rounds out its full bodied flavor. Compared to soy sauce and tamari which are soy-based and very high in salt ~ for people with soy and wheat allergies or other health concerns, Coconut Aminos is completely soy-free and wheat-free and contains 73% less sodium than even the reduced sodium versions of soy sauce.

Does this product need refrigeration?

Yes, it should be stored in the refrigerator after opening.

What is the shelf life of Coconut Aminos, and if stored in the fridge, how long can the shelf life be extended past its expiration date?

What is the sodium content?

Coconut Aminos contains 73% less sodium than even the reduced sodium soy sauces on the market. One teaspoon contains only 90 mg of sodium, less than half the salt content of soy sauce at 234 mg per tsp.

How does Coconut Secret Coconut Aminos compare to other brands on the market?

Don’t settle for imitations! Back in 2008 we introduced Coconut Aminos and even gave it its name. While there are now many copycat products using our Coconut Aminos name, none can match the unique and amazing flavor of the original.

Do you add yeast or other fermentation starter?

One of the primary characteristics of coconut tree sap, is that it begins to ferment on its own within only a few short hours after it is collected. We do NOT add yeast or any other fermentation catalyst.

Which amino acids are present?

Please refer to the amino acid chart on our “Coconut Sap Nutrition” page.

Does MSG occur naturally in Coconut Aminos like it does in some soy sauce products?

There is absolutely NO MSG in Coconut Aminos, naturally occurring or otherwise. A few of our team members are very MSG-sensitive and have never experienced even the slightest reaction to this product.

Does tapping the coconut tree for its sap affect the growth of coconuts?

When coconut trees are tapped for the purpose of sap production, the tree's ability to produce coconuts is NOT LOST. Research conducted in the Philippines at the Davao Research Center showed the viability of producing both sap and coconuts in sequence in the same unopened spadices (stems) of coconut palms. This involves tapping for coconut sap in the first half of the spathe (at the blossoms), and allowing the remaining half to develop normally, ultimately producing fully mature 12 month-old coconuts. This research further revealed, that incorporating this innovative new method increased productivity of sap and nut yields 5-7 times higher than traditional methods.

Nectar & Crystals FAQs

Roll up topics

What are Coconut Nectar and Crystals?

Our Nectar and Crystals are essentially the same product except that the Crystals are the next level of evaporation after the Nectar stage. Both are made from one single ingredient: Organic Coconut Tree “Sap” which is hand collected from the flowering stems at the top of the coconut tree, then evaporated till it thickens into a syrupy Nectar, or further evaporated till it crystallizes into a flavorful brown coconut sugar.

Do these products taste like coconut?

Not even a little! Since our Coconut Nectar and Crystals are both made from the tree “sap” and not at all from the coconut, they do not have a coconutty flavor.

Do Coconut Nectar or Crystals need to be refrigerated?

Not at all! Both of these products are completely shelf stable at ambient room temperatures.

What is the shelf life of each of these products?

They expiration dates for each of these products is two years from time of packaging. However, if stored properly they can safely be consumed for another 6 months to 1 year.
